Some Words and Deeds of the Cardinal
In his pastoral letter during times of persecution, "It is our intention to declare solemnly … we shall consecrate our diocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. So that this solemn ceremony might be a giving of ourselves in deed, and not merely in name, we ask the priests of our diocese to join with us in recommending to you the consecration of your families and parishes to the Immaculate Heart of Mary."
In his pastoral letter asking daily recitation of the Rosary in the presence of the family, he wrote, "It has been objected that the interminable repetition of the same words might easily risk making formal prayer monotonous and routine. To speak thus, one fails to understand the language of love and to be unmindful of the language of children. In this repetition there is love, piety, the spirit of humility and the perfume of true simplicity."
In the midst of persecutions, Bishop Kung declared 1952 the Marian Year in Shanghai. Bishop Kung visited that church and personally led the rosary while hundreds of the armed police looked on. At the end of the rosary, leading the congregation, Bishop Kung prayed: "Holy Mother, we do not ask you for a miracle. We do not beg you to stop the persecutions. But we beg you to support us who are very weak."
He answered to the prosecutor "I am a Roman Catholic Bishop. If I denounce the Holy Father, not only would I not be a Bishop, I would not even be a Catholic. You can cut off my head, but you can never take away my duties."
"I am ready to go back to prison tomorrow to defend my faith. I would be a traitor if I had dreamt for a moment of denying it." In 1985.
"The years of imprisonment in solitary cell would have been impossible to endure without the prayers of the Universal Church." In 1991.
